HB-EGF is expressed in macrophages, monocytes, endothelial cells and muscle cells and is known as HB-EGF because of its strong affinity with heparin. It plays an important role in wound healing, myocardial hypertrophy, and heart development and function. The transmembrane form of HB-EGF is a unique receptor for diphtheria toxin and plays a role in signaling in cells. HB-EGF is involved in normal physiological and pathological processes, including tumor progression and metastasis, organ proliferation, and atherosclerotic disease.
