Most MMP's are secreted as inactive proproteins which are activated when cleaved by extracellular proteinases. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008] Function: Matrix metalloproteinases degrade protein components of the extracellular matrix such as fibronectin, laminin, gelatins and/or collagens.
