PubMed PubMed Product Detail Hirudin is a highly effective and very specific anticoagulant which specifically inhibits formation of fibrin and activation of factors V, VIII and XIII by forming irreversible, noncovalent 1:1 complexes with a-thrombin. Hirudin is a 65 amino acid polypeptide, 7 kDa protein naturally originating from the medical leech Hirudo medicinalis. It is the most potent thrombin inhibitor known to date.
Function:
Hirudin is a potent thrombin-specific protease inhibitor. It forms a stable non-covalent complex with alpha-thrombin, thereby abolishing its ability to cleave fibrinogen.
